October is National Bullying Prevention Month—and every dollar raised by “Play FORE! Kindness in Schools” will support bullying prevention and student resiliency programs in local schools.

Golf tournament details

“Play FORE! Kindness in Schools” kicks off with registration at 10:30 a.m. and a putting contest is available until the 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. Everyone will play “best ball” until returning to the club house for an awards dinner, drawings and a silent auction. The tournament also features games, prizes, meals and exceptional giveaways.

Register to golf or donate at csjpa.org/golf2019/. Golfers of all skill levels are welcome and tax-deductible donations are always appreciated.

Support for local anti-bullying efforts

In just the last five years, the golf tournament has raised more than $206,000 for the California Schools JPA Student Bullying Prevention Fund, which supports organizations changing the lives of students in local school districts. School principals and counselors have noted the important differences made by these programs, such as the Safe School Ambassadors® training from Community Matters.

“It would definitely be beneficial to continue with the Safe School Ambassadors Program at our site. We want to empower students to help each other and be able to know how to diffuse situations before they happen,” said Deborah Hutchinson, principal of Liberty Elementary School in Ontario.

All proceeds from this year’s tournament will focus on giving students the tools to create a positive environment in their schools, training principals and teachers to see students as “at potential” rather than “at risk”, and teaching school communities how to replace bullying and violence with kindness and respect.

History of the tournament

Did you know that 73% of students feel they have been bullied in their school career? The Annual Fundraising Golf Tournament was created in response to a bullying-related tragedy faced by one California Schools JPA employee and her family. After being severely teased and tormented by her classmates, a loving 12-year-old girl took her own life. Her suicide was felt throughout the community, and California Schools JPA made it a goal to work to prevent bullying and help build stronger, more resilient students.
