Welcome to the California Schools Risk Management (CSRM) web site. For those of you new to CSRM, welcome and thank you for joining us. It has been my pleasure to serve our member districts as president of the JPA (Joint Powers Authority) for the past 5 years.
A JPA is a collective group of like public entities that pool their resources to benefit all by spreading the cost or risk among its members. CSRM provides insurance and loss control services to each of our thirty-one member school districts. These programs include: Workers Compensation, Property, and Liability Insurance, as well as several other programs directed at specific school losses. We are school people, addressing school issues, while providing school solutions. This model allows us to attack our issues head-on with specific knowledge and expertise. The narrow focus allows us to keep rates low, since we are not offering one-size-fits-all remedies to a variety of unrelated business problems.
I want to personally thank all of our members for their increased participation in JPA trainings, programs, and meetings including the Annual Members’ Forum. For those who were unable to attend CSRM’s Annual Members’ Forum, held October 25, 2016, I would like to highlight some of the key points. All members and alternates were treated to two days of educational and impactful presentations at the Disneyland Hotel. The presentations included information on leadership from Dr. Ken Blanchard and Dr. Margie Blanchard, information on how to package and prepare for a case on fraud for the District Attorney, an in-depth discussion on the impact of sexual misconduct claims, risks and benefits of virtual and augmented reality technology, managing data breaches, transgender experiences, and recognizing the reality of human trafficking in schools. Each speaker was excellent and shared personal experiences and stories that made their presentation that much more impactful. The entire conference was a great way to not only connect with peers from a multitude of districts, but also to engage with your JPA risk managers. Since the implementation of JPA risk managers, we have seen claims nearly halved. This shows what a power-house these risk managers are, and they are available to each one of you to problem solve at your district at no additional cost.
It is my challenge to you during my last year as president to attend more CSRM programs, encourage others to take more of the trainings, and engage more with the JPA. There is no such thing as being too involved. CSRM is member run and we will continue our progress with your continued collaboration, support, and engagement.
